The visitor - video 2016

Gina is a researcher in digital culture and interested in our daily encounters with hybrid spaces, the geographically referenced locations which, particularly through the use of wearable technology, create digital ‘traces’ of our physical activity. Technology allows us to assemble and re-assemble these traces into our own virtual art galleries whilst on the move. These personal galleries create both private and public aesthetic spaces to be enjoyed and shared. For the 'Art in Granton' exhibition (18-20 March 2016), Gina created a multimedia installation entitled ‘The Visitor’ based on a walk around Granton Gasworks and the derelict Madelvic factory, now awaiting an uncertain future. ‘The Visitor’ is a collaboration with Edinburgh-based musician and student Harry Bongo who provided the evocative track ’Storm’. Down the wire - video - 2019

‘Down to the Wire’ is a film about the sensory memory of an everyday landscape. The assemblage of photography, mixed media paintings and music evokes urban encounters, reiterated, and representing the multiplicities of a walk. Granton Gasworks is a well-known local landmark and even a navigator for ships in the Firth of Forth. Lesser known is the Madelvic Motorworks factory, now in a derelict condition, hidden, and its fascinating story of producing electric cars in 1898 is almost forgotten. Both structures are on the ‘at risk register’ of Buildings in Scotland, and on the ‘Listed’ buildings of the national register. Gina Fierlafijn Reddie produced this intimate visual experience incorporating the use of metal wire and nails to remind the viewer of the rich industrial heritage of these sites. Dinner at the Madelvic Wireworks - video 2020

During lockdown, Gina Fierlafijn Reddie came across a photograph on the Living Memory Association Facebook page of a large group of Madelvic Wire Works employees - all male - taken at a formal dinner event in 1965. The photo had a cinematographic quality which reminded her of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Gina reused photographs she took a few years of the derelict car factory, as well as video of a mixed media work entitled ‘The Works’ she created in 2019. This video uses the new soundscape ‘Husk’ created by musician/composer Harry Bongo whom she has collaborated with on numerous occasions. The video evokes the eeriness this derelict building represents, grasping the forgotten sounds of workers’ conversations and the drafts blowing through the broken windows and doors, now all boarded up.
